Veganville’s First Residents Arrive!

It has been two years of getting to know the property, budgeting, taking donations, selling merchandise, planning and researching. We are so excited to announce that we have our first animal residents on Veganville!!!  Over these past few years, one of the most asked questions I have received is when Veganville will have animals.  I have worked on enough sanctuaries over the years to know how important it is to be ready financially and physically before committing to the care of animal rescues.

Veganville was a blank slate of a property when I arrived in May of 2016.  It’s a wild and rustic piece of property and there were no safe enclosures built.  Winters are rough and I spent the first winter being warmed by wood only heat, busted pipes, broken appliances, snow tires and power outages while balancing single parenting to my six year old son and a 45 minute commute to a full time job.

I’m a master planner and problem solver and thrive in challenging situations but boy was that first winter hard.  It took two years to get adjusted to our new lives on the farm and to really get to know the land.  Thank you to everyone who has come out these past few years and helped on the property and thank you to everyone abroad for donating or buying merchandise.  Your support helped us welcome two beautiful pigs in late April, Petunia and Peaches.

Petunia, a Potbelly Pig, was abandoned by her family when we was about one year of age. She found a loving and caring home for the next four years. Though the family cared for her well being, they were on the lookout for a more permanent home for her. She arrived to Veganville on April 29th 2018 at the age of five. She is very vocal and spunky. She loves eating apples, tummy rubs and nesting in lots of straw. We are so happy to have her.

Peaches was rescued by the same family from being sold for meat. Peaches is a ten  month old KuneKune pig. She and Petunia are a bonded pair and do everything together. She is friendly, always wagging her tail and oh so clever. She loves ear rubs and bananas. She’s pure delight and adds a very special spark to the farm.

It has been recommended that the girls need to be spayed as soon as possible. Spaying female pigs is specifically important because they are endangered of health risks if kept intact. They have an extremely high chance of developing reproductive cancers, including ovarian, mammary and uterine. Intact female pigs will also be at high risk for life threatening infections such as pyometra and mastitis.

It is recommended to perform the procedure on pigs as young as three months old to reduce recovery times or complications. Peaches is ten months old and Petunia is estimated to be five years old.

Spaying pigs is a complicated surgery because of the unique anatomy of the pot bellied pig. They have miles of intestines and a uterus that’s very long because of the large number of piglets that are born at one time. There are only a few vets in Oregon that are qualified to perform this procedure and it will cost $600 per pig.

Veganville is devoted to providing the best possible care for our rescue animals and it is clear to us that this is the best thing we can do for their health in the long run. We won’t be rescuing any more animals until the girls can get the care they deserve.

Please help us raise the funding needed for their spay procedures.
Thank you and please share!

2018 Veganville Happenings

Greetings from Veganville!  Spring is arriving to our coastal mountain property and we have been planning and working away to achieve some milestone objectives this year!

Veganville Design
Veganville Property Design

We now have our vision planned out for the property and how to best utilize every inch of the land to suit our mission. Veganville strives to become an example of sustainable farming utilizing permaculture methods. Permaculture is the development of an agricultural ecosystem that is sustainable with the greatest amount of self-reliance for any given area, property, or community. To begin achieving this, Veganville is having the land surveyed, applying for a Fruit Orchard Grant and implementing fund-raising for fencing the perimeter, animal enclosures, and garden plot.

With 36,770,958.98 gallons per year of rainwater collection potential annually, nitrogen rich soil, located in USDA Zone 8a, and solar/wind energy source capabilities, Veganville has a unique opportunity to utilize the land to it’s maximum potential.

Good land management requires a beneficial relationship with the local ecosystems. For Veganville, this includes keeping part of the property wild. With over 20 endangered species in the area, Veganville is committed to preserving a wildlife conservation area on the property. On January 17, 2018, Veganville became a Certified Wildlife Habitat® with the National Wildlife Federation and the Oregon Association of Northwest Steelheaders.

We are also working on our first animal enclosures. One being our chicken coop and the other, a half-acre enclosure connected to a small barn. We are very excited to welcome our first rescues this spring so stay tuned for news and ways to help us out with this. We are planning on hosting work parties on the property every third Sunday of the month now through September.

We are continuing as a host farm for WWOOF-USA and accepting WWoofers through October and renting out RV Hookups through TryItTiny, AirBNB and Hipcamp.

We are very excited to start our third year as an organization achieving some mission milestones and thank everyone out there for your continued support. We look forward to what the year has in store for us!

We are Tax Exempt!

We are so excited to let you know that Veganville is now officially a Tax Exempt 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization!

We received our articles of non-profit corporation status in February of 2016, purchased the property in June and worked very hard to apply for our tax exempt status in December of 2016. Any donation made to Veganville since February of 2016 is now officially tax-deductible.

We are diligently working on fundraising and grant opportunities to begin building safe enclosures and shelters for our first rescues. With the Oregon coastal storms starting in October through March, summer is the time to be working hard on the property.

If you’re interested in getting involved or helping us start-up the sanctuary, you can do any of the following:

  • Volunteer your time at the farm.
  • Spread the word about Veganville by sharing Facebook posts and/or passing out brochures.
  • Donate resources such as essential farm tools/equipment.
  • Donate to our gofundme or directly to PayPal at ceciliamialon@veganvilleoregon.com
  • Purchase needed items from our Amazon Wishlist
  • Any feedback or ideas are always welcome as well.

We are hosting a work party this Sunday July 30th from 10am-2pm and also a camp out Meteor Shower viewing Saturday August 12th.  Please reply with any questions or if you are interested in these events.

Thank you!

Happy New Year from Veganville!

2016 being our first year as an organization, we have come a long way!  We filed for our Articles of Incorporation, purchased our property, networked in the community, applied for our non-profit status, had some events on the property and worked really hard on getting this property ready for animal rescues.  We are really looking forward to 2017 and our hopes of opening to the public this summer.

We had an opportunity to rescue a couple of unwanted donkeys from a local farm but they were given away before we were ready for them.  The same farm is looking for a home for two llamas currently.  This property does not have safe enclosures for animals yet but we are working on an enclosure for the llamas or cows and a chicken coop.

Please stay tuned for upcoming work parties and events on the farm.  If anyone is interested in coming to look at the property, please contact us at contact@veganvilleoregon.com

We are going to really need the support of the community this year to get us up and running in 2017.  We are so looking forward to what the coming year has in store for us!

Veganville At Portland VegFest 2016

Veganville had the great opportunity to be a vendor at Northwest VegFest 2016 on October 22nd and 23rd.  We were very excited to be among the Portland Vegan Community and enjoyed meeting some wonderful people who showed interest in becoming involved with us.

img_4483For everyone who donated and purchased merchandise, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  Being a new sanctuary, every little bit helps us get started.  For everyone who submitted their emails, we are working on an email campaign that will keep everyone up to date on future events, animal rescues and work events.

img_4500We look forward to next year’s VegFest and how we can all come together and help animals, the environment and humanity.

Camp Out on Veganville

Veganville hosted their first Camp Out event on August 20th, 2016.  It was a beautiful night on the farm and we had visitors all the way from Portland join in around the fire.
img_3990img_3991It was a delightful evening of forging new friendships, Vegan S’mores, delicious food and great conversation under the stars.  Veganville plans on making this a yearly event around the Perseids Meteor Shower in mid-August 2017.

Veganville (No) Meat & Greet

Just a few weeks in the area and we are thrilled at the amount of support Veganville has received from the Portland community.  We hosted our first event on Sunday June 26th to give the community a chance to come and meet us and answer questions about our vision of becoming a farm animal sanctuary and eco-village as well as our time line of how to get that started.
